Sisterhood’s Success: Mellissa’s Story
Because of funding from The Downing Family Foundation, Caring Ladies Assisting Students to Succeed (C.L.A.S.S.) is making a big difference. For example, Mellissa is the eldest of five children in a single parent home. She is the sole caretaker of four younger siblings due to her mother’s terminal health issue. During the most important years of her academic life, Melissa’s home obligations began setting her back in school. In spite of all her struggles, she still found time to dream about a future as a singer. Her dream began to take shape as she was invited to audition for a musical scholarship at a local college. With the help of C.L.A.S.S., she was provided new clothes and a visit to the hair salon to help boost her self-esteem and confidence. Transportation was also provided for her big audition day. With the support and encouragement from the women of C.L.A.S.S., Melissa impressed the judging panel so much that she was awarded a full scholarship into the college’s music program.

“I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being,
let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.” ~William Penn
